Tried & True Dairy-Free Thanksgiving Recipes

I’m thinking of all my dairy-free mamas out there this Thanksgiving! My first Thanksgiving when I was dairy-free, I brought my own little mini meal to my family’s house. I didn't want to inconvenience anyone or make them feel like they had to be dairy free. Not to mention even the most well-meaning host might not realize that dairy free means zero dairy. Not “there’s only a little butter in this dish” dairy-free. So I made my own Thanksgiving and honestly, I couldn’t even tell the difference in most of the dishes. For more dairy-free swaps head over to this post. This year I’m cooking an entirely dairy-free Thanksgiving at our home so that our daughter doesn’t have to miss out on all the yummy Thanksgiving classics! I rounded up the recipes we’re cooking here — because no mama should have to miss out on Thanksgiving!

1. Sage Stuffing

The secret? Sub the butter for Earth Balance (we prefer the soy-free kind). I also add loose sage sausage for added flavor and the fat from the sausage gives it that oomph that butter usually provides.

2. Vegan Gluten-Free Green Bean Casserole

Green bean casserole is one of the creamier Thanksgiving dishes but one I can’t imagine going without. Last year I subbed almond milk in a traditional recipe but it wasn’t nearly as rich and creamy so I’m excited to try this one.

3. Vegan Garlic and Olive Oil Mashed Potatoes

I make mashed potatoes year-round and my recipe consists of Yukon gold potatoes, almond, milk and Earth Balance with kosher salt and coarse ground pepper. There’s no real measuring that goes on - just a dash and a dollop until the consistency and flavor is just right. This recipe codifies what I already do with the added yumminess of garlic and chives.

4. Vegan Sweet Potato Casserole

I really love pecans on Thanksgiving so this is right up my alley! An added bonus: you can make it ahead of time.

5. Simple Cranberry Sauce

I think you’d be hard pressed to find a cranberry sauce with dairy so this should be safe no matter where you are eating. I’m including the recipe I use because it’s an old standby.

6. Thyme Turkey Breasts and Gravy

Just sub Earth Balance for the ghee! For a whole turkey this recipe is a good one, too.

“But where is the pie?”, you might be asking yourself. I haven’t tested dairy-free pie recipes yet so I don’t have any that I can confidently provide. Once I make my own I will share these!

Bon appétit!
